In case of irradiating a sample with light in infra-red spectrum you receive characteristic absorption bands coined by the contained elements and their chemical bonds.
With the help of a Fourier transform the gained transmission curve can be analyzed. The result is for instance compared with a spectrum from library making the identification of the material possible.
This method is employed for identifying synthetic finds or organic depositions.
