Hydrolytic resistance at 98 °C (glass grains method)

The partial solubility of soda-lime glass by attack of water is described by holding glass grains with a defined and specific surface at a temperature of 98 °C for one hour in distilled water. During this procedure especially alkaline components of the grains’ surface will be extracted.

After that, their content in the solution is determined by titration with diluted muriatic acid. Accordingly the alkaline contents the glass is divided in hydrolytic classes.
