The existence of polyvalent elements in glasses contributes to forming different oxidation states depending on the furnace’s atmosphere, the employed raw materials and the furnace’s temperature. Thus certain characteristics of the glass change f. ex. the colour. By reference to the proportion between Fe2O3/FeO the oxidations state is evaluated.
The determination of both components is performed wet chemical by a photometric method after separate digestions.
